XPost: alt.fan.rush-limbaugh, alt.atheism, alt.politics.immigration       XPost: sac.politics, rec.arts.tv       From: x@y.com              New Study Links Higher Intelligence to Liberal Political Beliefs              by Richard Gosk | May 25, 2025 | Politics       Liberals are Smarter Than Conservatives              A groundbreaking study from the University of Minnesota is shedding new       light on the age-old debate over what shapes our political views. According       to the research, there is a strong and consistent link between higher       intelligence and a tendency to adopt left-wing political beliefs,       particularly views rooted in social liberalism, egalitarianism, and       resistance to authoritarianism.       The Study: Intelligence and Ideology              Researchers examined over 300 families, analyzing siblings who were raised       in the same household to control for environmental factors. This allowed       scientists to better isolate the role of genetics and cognitive ability in       political orientation. The core finding: smarter siblings, those with       higher IQ scores, were more likely to lean liberal, even when raised       alongside their more conservative siblings.              But the study didn’t stop at IQ scores. The team employed polygenic       scoring, a cutting-edge method that tracks the presence of genetic markers       associated with cognitive ability. These polygenic scores were also found       to correlate with liberal attitudes across the sample.       Key Traits Associated with Intelligence and Liberalism              The research focused on specific ideological traits including:               Social liberalism: Support for civil rights, environmental protection,       and social welfare programs.        Egalitarianism: A belief in equality across race, gender, and       socioeconomic status.        Resistance to authoritarianism: Skepticism toward centralized power and       support for democratic institutions and norms.              Individuals scoring higher in intelligence, and with polygenic markers for       cognitive ability, were significantly more likely to endorse these values.       Nature vs. Nurture: Untangling the Roots              The study’s design helped separate genetic influences from environmental       ones. By studying siblings raised in the same environment, the researchers       controlled for upbringing, allowing them to identify genetic differences as       a potential factor in shaping political outlooks.              Still, the researchers are quick to point out that intelligence is not       destiny. “Political beliefs are the product of a complex interplay between       biology and experience,” said one of the study’s lead authors. “We’re not       suggesting that genetics alone dictates ideology. Culture, education,       personal experience, these all play powerful roles.”       Why This Matters              The findings challenge simplistic narratives about political orientation       being driven purely by upbringing or social class. Instead, they highlight       how cognitive traits may influence how individuals process information,       weigh social values, and assess risks, all of which are critical in forming       political opinions.              It also opens up broader questions about how genetic predispositions might       affect other complex human behaviors and beliefs, including religion,       economic theory, and even tolerance for ambiguity or change.       Proceed With Caution              While the link between intelligence and liberal values is statistically       significant, the researchers caution against reading too much into the       results. Intelligence is multi-dimensional, and polygenic scoring remains       an emerging field with limitations. Correlation, after all, does not equal       causation.              Moreover, political ideology is not a binary. People may lean liberal in       some areas and conservative in others, and shifts in belief are common       across a person’s lifetime.       The Bottom Line              The University of Minnesota study offers compelling evidence that higher       intelligence, as measured both by IQ and genetic markers, is associated       with more liberal political beliefs. However, political ideology remains a       complex mosaic formed by countless intersecting factors. Intelligence may       tilt the scales, but it doesn’t draw the whole map.              As the science of genetics continues to evolve, so too will our       understanding of what shapes the beliefs that shape the world.              https://uomod.com/new-study-links-higher-intelligence-to-liberal-political-       beliefs-but-its-not-that-simple/              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
