   Einstein left the Swiss patent office in 1914.  In 1926, the year that   
   he and Leó Szilárd made the invention, he was at Humboldt University of   
   Berlin.  Szilárd patented it in the US (in both names) in 1930.  It was   
   eventually patented in several countries. It is an acknowledged   
   improvement on another invention.  Electrolux bought the patents for   
   $750.  Not much came of it: it was obsoleted by the introduction of   
   Freon.
