   Poor free men would get jobs and day labour on farms.   
      
   The Roman army had gone deep into the slave selling business. The   
   farming estates used cheaper slaves and stop hiring free men. As   
   slavery penetrated more of the economy the work opportunity for   
   free disappeared.   
      
   The emperors were importing vast amounts of grain from Egypt and   
   north Africa. They could afford to feed the free and prevent   
   social unrest, including letting the rich consume far more than   
   they contributed. It worked.   
      
   The free men continued joining the Army so emperors could   
   continue playing war.   
      
   The fall had more to do with plague than non-rebelling Romans who   
   depended on the Empire to be well fed.
