I had more issues getting Ubuntu running than I ever did Slackware, TBH.

I don't have the answers but I highly recommend going to the official 
Slackware forum on linuxquestions.org and asking there.  Patrick hangs out 
there.  You'd probably get a quicker and more firm answer to your questions 
there.

I've used ESXi but only for Windows Server installs.
