Sorry that you hate... or whatever. But you see: men do not live by
tennis alone, or whatever - and you can get confirmations from those
who regularly post about movies, obama, and 9/11 in this group.

I realize that people want purity: We want "this newsgroup only for
discussing such and such a subject"... But such is an ideal that is
unfulfilled in practice. When I see such an ideal is in reality not
followed, then I think it is gamed for me to post what in my opinion
should concern everyone, such as war and peace and a government which
is out of control. I try to be discrete; but if I can draw attention
in a small way to some of the problems we're facing today, then maybe
it is not a waste of my time to post or yours to read (if you choose
to do so). In fact, under such a condition, it seems that it is my
   civic duty to post!

Remember that famous anecdote about the mindset (of many Europeans
between the two world wars) to not speak out in opposition to the
crimes of the Nazis, thinking that it only concerned others, such as
the gays, the gypsies, and the communists...? It is easy for us to
forget that we are living in a world far from being pure and ideal.
And we don't want to wait until it is too late for us to help (each
   other, just to survive).

It is easy to assume that the government is always right. And many
people, including pious Christians, bought into G W Bush's "just war"
bullshit for the Iraq War. Clearly there was nothing "just" about the
Iraq War. And people are slowly beginning to recognize that. Yet, I
think that people are still slow to realize that our terrible economy
has a lot to do with our preoccupation of the so-called "national
security", which is nothing but a euphemism for hegemony abroad and
which has nothing to do with our personal security.

And so raising people's consciousness is an important civic duty as
far as I am concerned. And I am quite convinced that Obama's missile
strike plan against Syria did not take off and the fact that the NSA
scandal is now causing Cheney, Feinstein, and Alexander to be on the
defensive are all because "thank goodness for people", like Charlie
Brown likes to say - enough people are fed up now while it wasn't so
ten years ago, or even two years ago, i.e., people are beginning to
realize that something is very wrong about our government and that
they need to speak up now.

And about hijacking the group, I see no evidence to that. I made the
subject line always crystal-clear as to what it is about. Nobody is
forcing you to read it if you're not interested. On the other hand,
had I posted a lot of messages about how Federer had played, e.g.,
without actually the competence to do so, it would be more justified
for you to say I have hijacked the group because my subject line would
have been misleading, costing you time. But I never did that.

On the other hand, I do care about the survival of humanity and that
is important. Given the way our government is run, I am not sure what
you mean by going forward, by posting about tennis alone. Nothing is
going forward with the government we have today!

Lastly, I think RST is a fairly interesting newsgroup because I've
learned stuff from it, although I would have no interest in the "all
time" this or that, especially when it comes to movies. But did I say
that so-and-so "hijacked" the group when he or she posted these
things? I don't because who am I to know that such an issue isn't
important for the poster and those who follow up on the post? I just
   don't read them.
