|    Cutting a Thief's Hand Off is Like Cutti    |

XPost: alt.fan.countries-jordan, soc.culture.jordan, soc.culture.palestine       XPost: soc.culture.israel, soc.culture.jewish       From: Reason@principles.com              Cutting a thief's hand off is like cutting a thief's whole entire arm off.              The thief should be allowed to work to pay the money back. The thief       will not be able to work and pay the money back if his hand is cut off.        Allowing the thief to keep his hand, work, and pay recompenses, is       more enriching and makes everyone better off.              As the thief didn't cut anyone's hand off, cutting a thief's hand off is       not an eye for an eye. There are now have handicapped mutilated people       walking around in some Arab societies. This is a truly draconian       punishment.              Plus, on the other hand (no pun intended), in the future there will be       robotic hands and better and the thieves will be able to buy their hands       back; so what would be the point of this penalty. This penalty is thus       ludicrous. Furthermore today, this penalty is a degenerate cost to       society. Instead of being able to work, the thief must become a       dependent. Such a notion is truly derelict. Cease mutilation and       torture as a means of punishment.              Mutilation and torture are akin to the death penalty. And yet they       equate to deliberate inhumanity, while the death penalty if exacted as       needed, may be a punishment of desperation. The death penalty for       thievery is not an appropriate punishment. Neither is mutilation.              The purpose of the law is to end inhumanity. A penalty like mutilation       is not appropriate for a crime like theft. Such punishment is a pure       injustice akin to murder as it is overkill and does not fit the crime.              Allow thieves to work and keep their hands. Then everyone will be       enriched.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
