These individuals are       capable of eloquent explanations, with reference to constitutional items, to       demonstrate their point.        Although it is true that the United States is a republic, with laws that       protect against the tyranny of the majority over the minority, it is also true       that it is inaccurate to insist that the United States is not a democracy. The       United States is both a        republic and a democracy.               The United States Constitution states that powers not delegated to the states       or federal government belong to the people of the United States. Jefferson       stated that when the government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are       unauthoritative, void, and        of no force. If the government's acts are void, due to government exceeding       its limit of authority, nevertheless, true authority remains with the people.               In case anyone still doubts this, the Declaration of Independence also spells       it out, as follows: ...that all men are created equal; that they are endowed       by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life,       liberty, and the        pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted       among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that       whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the       right of the people        to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its       foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to       them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.              Now, one may argue about what limits there should be on democracy or whether a       given democracy is plagued by excessive corruption.
