   Seven years ago armed guards accompanied the transfer of 10 million books   
   from France's historic national library (.) to the ultramodern new library   
   on the Left Bank. Yet last autumn, after a theft of ancient Hebrew   
   manuscripts prompted an inventory, a confidential report disclosed that no   
   fewer than 30,000 registered books were missing.   
      
   Le Figaro published details of that report, including the fact that 1,183   
   documents were also missing.
