   Shortly after Howard Carter's death his niece Miss Phyllis Walker deposited   
   all his personal papers in the Griffith Institute Archive at Oxford, where I   
   recently had the privilege of viewing Carter's daily journal. On opening   
   Tutankamun's tomb Carter is    
   famously alleged to have told Lord Carnarvon that he saw "wonderful things"   
   but his journal actually reads "when Lord Carnarvon said to me 'Can you see   
   anything'. I replied to him 'Yes, it is wonderful'".
