   Maybe it's just my imagination but I seem to have seen fewer spam   
   messages since doing so. I've started to do that in soc.history as   
   well, and there seem to have been fewer such messages there as well.   
      
   I don't think such a technique would work with persistent trolls, but   
   it does seem to work with some spammers who seem to be trying to take   
   over certain newsgroups as their own communication channel.
