Perhaps something like this should be added:

   ---
If you see a post that is a response to a very old (3 to 30 years) post,
where the poster is clearly under the impression that they are
responding with a private email to the original poster, then please
consider _not_ posting a further followup to the 'group; if you feel you
have to respond (or have further information on the subject of the
post), please do so by direct email to the poster (of the new post).
This is because (a) the original poster (of the new post) may well not
see any followup posted in the 'group [they may well not be familiar
even with the concept of newsgroups], and (b) such further posts waste
the time of other readers, and may irritate some.

Such posts - which often seem not to realise how old the post to which
they are responding is, despite often including its date, and often
quote insufficient (sometimes none) of the original post for it to be
clear what they are about - seem to originate from some combination of
   (1) gmail users and (2) their having accessed the 'group via Google
Groups, possibly as the result of a search result without it being
obvious [to them] that the result is in a newsgroup. So far, it is not
clear why this combination results in such posts: those who have tried
say that the user interface of Google Groups _does_, for example, show
the date of the post to which one might consider responding. Note that
not all gmail users are susceptible to this problem; some, especially
those who access newsgroups using a proper (NNTP) news client, do
understand the newsgroup concept and are valuable contributors.
   ---

So maybe something like this could be added to the FAQ, otherwise not
changed for over 4 years? Posted here "for members to mull over", as
   suggested.
