   If there are only now being destroyed (presumably for a storage space   
   reason), maybe there might still be the chance to suggest they be given   
   to some voluntary organisation for scanning and eventual transcription?   
   Obviously there are the usual data protection concerns, but one would   
   _hope_ that those can be got round, e. g. by a   
   seal-until-after-x-years-or-person-is-known-to-be-dead or similar   
   rule(s).
