   An option might be finding if the police day reports were kept for   
   Amsterdam around the period of his (estimated) arrival. He could be   
   mentioned in such a report. I know these reports were kept for Gouda in   
   1898 because of some recent research but in that case it was easier as a   
   specific date could be given and Gouda is far smaller then Amsterdam.   
   But it might be an option.
