   Google can do something about it. uk.telecom used to be spammed with   
   many many posts offering dubious (stolen probably) credit card   
   details, bank account details etc. All from gmail addresses all posted   
   via google groups.   
      
   Google killed the group completeley. Then they, eventually, have made   
   uk.telecom a read only group.  But it still  archives newsgroup   
   postings from elsewhere.   
      
   Who made google do this? I have no idea!
