(The "with Consent of" _isn't_ crossed out as       > it often is, but is certainly left blank.)              In 1821 the relevant legislation was Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act of       1753 which came into force in 1754. Under this legislation, the age of       majority was 21. People under 21 could marry, but the details depended       on whether the marriage was by banns or by licence. If by licence, the       minor's parent or guardian had to consent to the marriage. If by banns,       the parent or guardian merely had not to object, and there was no       requirement that the parent or guardian even had to be present when the       banns were called. As active consent is not required with banns, it's       common to find the "with consent of ____" part of the register left       blank but not crossed out.              Richard              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
