I use Ancestry for access to the records they have exclusive control of,
and to search. And for DNA matching.

I don't store _anything_ there - I don't trust them to keep anything, so
like you I download anything useful I find there, to my own computer
(and back that up from time to time). I have uploaded GeDCom files to
them; the first time I did accept lots of their hints and similar, so
the people in that tree have lots of records, other people's links, and
so on linked to them - but then, when I uploaded a more recent GeDCom,
they offered no way to transfer all the links over from the old to the
new tree. (Well, they suggested I moved them manually. For >1k people,
most with many links. No thanks.)

As I say, I use Ancestry for things for which I have no other option.

You'll need to have this fish in your ear. (First series, fit the first.)
