   It was but the underlying foundation was development along a road like   
   several other places around the Highlands, several others of which   
   also have a widened area or town square along the route. Tomintoul is   
   similar but with the square offset to one side, both have parallel   
   back roads on each side. The proportion of carriageway/footway/other   
   space varies but the general theme is a more open area on a road
