   All these fruits can be easily preserved -- dried -- though   
   I only found a few varieties of melon available on the   
   proverbial 30-second Google search. But if we're talking   
   Honey Dew or Cantaloupe then you're all set!   
      
   It wouldn't be the healthiest diet, but in a world where   
   40 is considered very old, I don't think it was too   
   much of a problem.   
      
   The transportation of seeds suggests migration. Though,   
   any traveler from the west who saw some potential in   
   foreign fruits would certainly have incentive to import   
   it into Europe.   
      
   Maybe that's it:  Traders provisioned themselves in   
   Asia, took a liking to the local fruits, even if only   
   dried, and cultivated it back home?
