From: jtem01@gmail.com              If, and I do mean "If" Cleopatra was buried       on her little island paradise there, this       Antirhodos, then there is an excellent chance       that her tomb is unplundered.              Well, let's face it, the Romans weren't likely       to allow a whole lot of wealth to go to the       grave. Money was power in ancient Rome, more       so than today as you could literally buy your       own army! So Cleopatra's tomb would no doubt       contain great treasures, but probably not too       much in the way of gold. Nope. The "Treasures"       would probably be in the way of artifacts that       we value, not necessarily the stuff that       Romans valued...              Here's the beauty: Antirhodos sunk in the 4th       century, right? So that was before the fall of       Rome! That was before any invaders had a       chance to conquer egypt and ransack the place       So, there's a great chance that the tomb       survived right up until the time of the       earthquake.              Unfortunately, it would also mean that       Cleopatra's remains are gone. The odds of them       surviving the water are slim to none.               ...the secret behind Egyptian mummification       was desiccation. We all know that. And drowning       her remains in water is the exact opposite! So,       we can't expect her remains to have survived,       while ancient sources tell us that Anthony's body       went the Roman why, and all that was left of him       was an urn.              Still, it would be great to find her tomb!                                                 -- --              http://jtem.tumblr.com/post/182667852886              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
