I don't know why there's even an "Argument."

If they're from some fringe religious group, the Essenes, a doomsday
cult awaiting the final battle of good vs evil with Rome cast as the
evil, how come the whole goddamn culture was exactly like them,
rebelling at the drop of a hat?

I went to an exhibit on Nabataea, for example. Some of the scrolls were
Nabataean. They even mentioned a divorce record! Elsewhere I read of
one scroll that was a Greek play!

The written word was valuable. It wasn't something that got thrown
   away.

   It was a cultural practice.
