   The surplus is what allowed a higher population density.   
      
   Originally coastal populations had the advantage over inland groups,   
   as the sea can sustain a higher population density. But after agriculture   
   entered the scene, the balance of power shifted inland, as agriculture   
   could support more people. PLUS, the grain never went bad, so long   
   as they kept it dry. So they could store their excess quite easily.
