   Life wasn't that simple.

Such places existed well into the time of Homo habilis, and before.
In fact, such places had always existed. They lacked the knowledge
   to exploit them.

The documentary I recommended claimed that a single individual
working for three weeks could accumulate enough of the wild grains
to feed four people for an entire year. But they needed something to
put in, some place to store -- a way to keep it dry for that year. And
they needed to process it. They needed to separate it from the rest
of the plant and turn it into something they could cook. So next they
needed new tools for harvesting, preparing & cooking this new
   food.

AND EVEN THEN IT WASN'T ENOUGH!

They could only be semi settled. Once they exploited a field it would
takes years -- plural -- for it to recover. So the better they got at
collecting, storing & processes this new food source, the more mouths
they could feed (the higher the population density) the quicker they
used up their food sources and had to move on...
