   interbreeding would have been on a tiny scale most of the time,

   You've heard of distributive computing, right?  Have a whole   
   bunch of different computers work on a small part of the problem,   
   find an answer much more quickly. Well, that's how I always saw   
   human evolution.   
      
   THE ICE AGE!   
      
   The glacial/interglacial cycle is a pump. The glaciers grow, the   
   sea drops, opening up highways between the continents, and   
   people mashed together, mixing the genes they each developed   
   in isolation.   
      
              ....that isolation being the "distributive computing" part.   
      
   Next. the interglacial came, sea level rose, drowning out the   
   highways, cutting everyone off from each other, so it was back   
   to separate little enclaves of evolution... only for the whole   
   process to start over again.   
      
   I think this is why we were able to evolve. In a sense, we got   
   10 or 20 million years worth of evolution done in only like 2
