   Cows have a hierarchy. COWS. There is no reason to assume   
   that such things only arose recently in humans.   
      
   Without a culture, without taboos there is nothing to slow down   
   incest. In fact, there is indirect evidence that this may be the   
   case --  Neanderthals don't seem to show a lot of genetic diversity   
   and some have claimed that the females, at least some of them,   
   left one group for another... as chimp females sometimes do.
