Encode/decode function return types changed from int to ssize_t

Potentially useful if someone wants to encode or decode > 2GB of data on a
suitable system.

I suspect this was to resolve some C++ compile warning(s), but seemed a
harmless set of changes found in Deuce's js-next78 branch.
