Remove wrong-headed loops added in 5b48bbdfb

If pthread_mutex_destroy() has failed because someone is holding
the lock, that means it's too late and there's no real way to
recover.

Just log a critical error and leak the mutex...

Except in the ring buffer, no way to indicate anything bad happened
there.
