in JavaScript, those ANSI sequences are translated by Synchronet into Ctrl-key
equivalents, as docuemnted here: https://wiki.synchro.net/server
terminal#extended_keys

But if Synchronet is running a truly *external* program (e.g. a Python app),
it does no filtering or translating of terminal escape sequences for you (the
"app" would have to do that for itself).
