The mail base is normally self-packed, so packing doesn't usually save much in
terms of disk space. That said, running a daily event that executed "smbutil
-a p %zmail.0.shd" should do pack the most recent backup of the mail base.

The reference to the empty mail.sdt file seems unrelated to packing. Maybe you
want us to not bother backing up an empty mail base? That sounds like an easy
feature to implement.
