   Well said, Kev.

Have you come across Karl Popper at all? I place him as the patron saint
of humanists, as well as being the most important philosopher of the
20th century. He had a very difficult personality, and his range of
interests (from quantum theory to experimental sociology, through logic
and the probability calculus) made him an easy target for derision.

Nevertheless, I strongly recommend an attempt. His writing is not
   obscure in fact very straightforward.

   Good luck!
