   Investigation of ice cores from the Antarctic shows close correlations   
   between temperatures and concentrations of greenhouse gases (carbon   
   dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide). This evidence related to a period   
   around 400,000 years ago, when apparently there were a series of wild   
   swings in the climate between ice ages and tropical temperatures, each   
   lasting no more than 15-20,000 years.   
      
   This was seen as confirmation that rising levels in these gases now   
   presage a serious rise in temperatures, as forecast by many scientists.
