One might need a certain religious bent to see it that way.

The patterns have been known for millennia but only a few have taken them
and actually run off the cliff with nothing else to support them. Learning
the map does not teach the territory or how to cross it.

Pretty good description imo, it's the total absolute acceptance of whatever
you have unknowingly chosen as your fate that frees you from your karmic
debt; not by magically cancelling it, but by paying it, willingly accepting
whatever type of ass-thumping you've stupidly earned for yourself,
sight-unseen, and if you survive that, consistently and constantly staying
   the hell out of debt/obligation.

Consider yourself slapped with a wet fish.
