I went to a French Lycée in Saigon, Vietnam, and
was taught by French teachers, male and female,
and just about the only things different I saw in
them was the famous shaking of the forearm in
the "Oh là là" gesture in French women and the
shoulder shrug and "touching wood" in men and
women, the last in talk but not in real gesture. I
never saw the hip-swing. Another strange
movement in Western women, to me, is the
hitting fists, in parallel, wholly in the air and not
against a real object, when women are angry or
upset with something. The thumb up has the
reverse meaning in Roman time, as in Coliseum
and its gladiatorial contests, and in the US both
thumbs can be up, as with Trump, and women
can add some flexion of the lower torso to
   enhance the effect.
