   Nigger has always been an ambiguous term.  It is a term I heard much of in   
   the '50s.  My dad used it to refer to the blacks who were owned by the need   
   to appear as other than they were.  It was often observed in cahoots with   
   dingle-balls and twice-pipes with three-times-shifters stuck onto a   
   rust-eaten barely-running junkmobile.  The others, who trudged along in   
   quiet dignity, were not much referred to at all, as a token of respect and   
   sadness.  Their plight was not something we could affect, since we were on   
   the same economic level that most them inhabited.  What one cannot affect,   
   he can remember, for a time when circumstances are different.
