What does mysticism have to do with religious experiences aka God?

Maybe when my eyes see "mysticism" my brain says "esotericism" or maybe
"being awake in realtime" but it says nothing about any deity beyond the
world around me, which is admittedly so far beyond human comprehension as
to seem godlike, but there's nothing remotely "divine" about it, but maybe
I don't know what that word means either.

Sometimes I feel somewhat strange when common words that I learnt as a
child of the '50s turn out to have been largely redefined by the
   intervening years' usage.
