   Surah Tal in Ballia district (UP, India) is the source of ALL ancient history   
   of India since Vedic period.  I am giving below shortest possible summary. I   
   think this Surah Tal deserves attention of Geological Survey of India.   
      
   At around 1500 BC,  king Asita was ruling Kosala Kingdom. During his reign a   
   KAPILA (reddish) VASTU (dawning/becoming light/object) i.e asteroid or   
   meteorite struck 10 Km north of Ballia (UP, India) at Surha Tal location (Lat   
   25.840279° , Long 84.178129   
   °) . The impact produced enormous seismic shockwaves with sound similar to   
   "HUM". 60,000 citizens of Kosala kingdom were turned into ash due to impact   
   heat in the asteroid impact crater. Lateron descendants of King Asita - from   
   King Sagara to King    
   Bhagiratha - were worried how to perform "water oblation" ritual to dead   
   citizens of Kosala. Finally, King Bhagiratha noticed that the impact crater   
   and Ganga river are at same level and distance between Ganga river and impact   
   crater is just 8-10 Km. He    
   dug a small channel from Ballia upto impact crater and diverted water of Ganga   
   river into the crater. Thus how he performed water oblation to his dead   
   citizens. That crater became "Surha Tal" or Surha Lake. In Google Earth   
   satellite images from 1984 to    
   2016 you can see that the area around the water body in Suraha Lake looks   
   circular. Natural lakes do not assume circular shape. It is circular because   
   it is impact crater. It lies within flood-plain of Ganga and Ghagra river. The   
   rim of impact crater is    
   eroded or washed away due to flood and other factors. On the north, north-east   
   and north-west  side of this Surha lake, there are many archaeological site   
   ranging from 1500 BC-2000 BC. One such site is "Pakka Kot" which is more than   
   5000 year old.   
      
   As there were no means of writing in 1500 BC, this story was carried forward   
   orally from generation to generation for many centuries. This story is   
   mentioned in Sarga 40 of Bala Kanda (Ramayana) and Chapter 107 of book 3 (   
   Mahabharata). By the time they    
   started writing down Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas in around 600 BC, this   
   story had become "Myth". KAPILA VASTU (reddish object i.e meteorite) became   
   Sage Kapila. Impact crater became "digging ground of 60,000 sons of King   
   Sagara to find ritual horse".    
   The "HUM" sound and heat produced by meteorite impact became "HUM" sound and   
   anger of Sage Kapila who turned 60,000 sons of King Sagara into ashes. The   
   channel dug by King Bhagiratha to divert water of Ganga into the crater became   
   myth that "King    
   Bhagiratha brought Ganga on Earth". That channel is still there as "Katehar   
   Nala" joining Ganga river and Surha Tal. As mentioned in 1907 "Ballia District   
   Gazetteer", water flows to and fro between Ganga and Surha Tal through this   
   Katehar Nala.   
      
   The "HUM" or "AUM" or "OM" sound produced by the meteorite impact became   
   divine/celestial sound for Brahmins on the bank of Ganga. That is why Vedas   
   start with "AUM" mantra. That meteorite became Sun like deity "SAVITR" in   
   Gayatri Mantra. The "AUM"    
   symbol is actually map of meteorite impact location. The dot and half circle   
   mirrors Surha Tal impact crater and rest of the diagram mirrors course of   
   Ganga i.e "Tri-Path-Gama" river. The devastation caused by the meteorite   
   impact also originated the    
   concept of "Tri Netra" Shiva (God of Destruction). That meteorie and impact   
   crater became "Third Eye of Shiva". The "AUM" symbol was rotated by 90 degree   
   and it became "Trishul" of Shiva. That impact crater is also Dhamma Wheel of   
   Buddha, Sudarshan    
   Chakra of Krishna, Ashok Chakra of Emperor Ashoka and presently it is on the   
   National Tri-Color Flag of India. Those spokes in Wheel or Chakra represent   
   "Ray System" of Asteroid Impact Crater.   
      
   This apocalyptic event happened during the reign of King Asita. The news   
   spread over vast area in Indian sub-continent. Due to frequent mention of King   
   "Asita" in these stories, the region came to be known as "Asia".   
      
   There is much more to this Surha Tal Impact Crater. It is helping me to find   
   locations of Ramayana, Mahabharata and Buddha. Surha Tal - Surah Tal - Sarah   
   Tal - SarahYu - Sarayu. Perhaps you can guess in what direction I am moving.   
       
   Some religious people will be disappointed but at the same time it will   
   rationalise whole history of India. Rational people will find that   
   mythological stories are not stupid. Those stories are distorted due to lack   
   of writing means, but even in that era    
   they carried forward history of India for many centuries just by remembering   
   it. Ultimately all Indians will take pride in their history and culture and   
   that is more important.
