Some things separate you from God

We seek God's presence and "they who seek shall find." It is not a
question of searching so much as an inner consciousness of the Divine
spirit in your heart. To realize God's presence you must surrender to
His will in the small as well as in the big things of life. This makes
God's guidance possible. Some things separate you from God -- a false
   word, a fear-inspired failure, a harsh criticism, a stubborn
resentment. These are the things that put a distance between your mind
and God. A word of love, a selfless reconciliation, and a kind act of
   helpfulness--these bring God closer.
I pray that I may think and say and do the things that bring God
closer to me. I pray that I may find Him in a sincere prayer, a kind
   word, or an unselfish deed.

January 12th - Ss. Tigrius and Eutropius
   d. 404

At Constantinople, the Saints Tigrius, priest, and Eutropius, lector,
who, in the time of Emperor Arcadius, were falsely accused of the fire
which destroyed the principal church and the senate building in order
to avenge the exile of St. John Chrysostom.  They suffered under
Optatus, prefect of the city, who was given to the worship of false
gods and a hatred for the Christian religion.

Two martyrs who suffered as a result of their support of St. John
Chrysostom. Members of the Church in Constantinople (Tigrius was a
priest and Eutropius his lector), they were outspoken defenders of
John Chrysostom who was banished from the imperial capital and later
died from abuse at the hands of his captors. The two were subsequently
arrested by imperial officials, charged with trying to set fire to the
cathedral and senate house of Constantinople (modern Istanbul,
   Turkey).

Eutropius died during the torture inflicted upon him. Tigrius was
exiled to Asia Minor, where he died.

   Saint Quote:
"Our Lady produced the inaccessible Light of her most blessed Son,
without receiving any injury from it nor staining in any way her
virginal purity. She produced Him without any effort, nor shock, nor
any violence whatsoever." [remaining a virgin during His birth,
because God made it miraculous, and a virgin ever after]
--St. Francis de Sales (Doctor, 1567-1622)

   Bible Quote:
Save us, O Lord, our God: and gather us from among nations: That we may give
thanks to thy holy name, and may glory in thy praise.  (Psalms 105:47)

31 DAYS OF PRAYER FOR THE HOLY SOULS
FROM THE PURGATORIAN MANUAL  (Imprimatur 1946)

   Thirteenth Day

THE SPECIAL DUTY OF EVERY ONE TO AID THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

Besides the general duty imposed upon us by the divine law of
charity, there is a special obligation incumbent upon every one to
assist particular souls. This duty devolves upon us in consequence of
   the personal relations with such souls during their earthly career;
for, whatever be the condition of man in life, he will have among the
souls, departed, who may be suffering in Purgatory, some to whom he is
indebted for particular favors and benefits.

But what could more forcibly elicit our charity and gratitude
than to behold our loved ones and our benefactors in extreme distress,
while we have the means of alleviating their suffering! That person
does not possess a spark of Christian charity, who, from neglect or
indolence, suffers the souls of his friends to be tormented in the
   flames of Purgatory.

Prayer: Revive, O Lord, within the hearts of Thy faithful, an active
commiseration for the brethren gone before us, that they may not, by
our indifference or neglect, suffer without relief and assistance.
   Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Special Intercession: Pray for the souls of those who are neglected by
   their relatives and friends.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine
upon them; may they rest in peace. Amen. (Three times)

Practice: Bestow alms for the relief of the suffering souls.

   Invocation: My Jesus, mercy!
