I once read somewhere a statement that all objects have a soul that
   protects their form.

An implication is that an object would be formless if it was just a
mass without processes to give it a shape and that those processes
can be collectively considered to be soul like.

Or one could alternatively say that if we don't know what the
processes are, why not regard them as constituting a soul?

Also one mystery of reality is that the internal angles of a triangle
add to 180 degrees. This can be explained as resulting from the
geometrical properties of space, but then one can ask what causes
   space to have such properties?

It would seem likely that space has processes that cause this to be
the case and if we don't know what they are, why not also regard them
   as constituting a soul?

So even without belief, its possible to argue that objects, rivers and
even empty space can be regarded as having souls, but in principle
this is a question of preference.
