   Probably a million or so did, in fact, perish in the anti-Jewish   
   social upheaval.  Keep in mind that there *was* a war on and the area   
   you mention was the scene of fierce combat; therefore, one expects to   
   see a shrinkage in the population.   
      
   Many of the Jewish people probably saw it coming and ran... as any   
   sensible person would do!
