   Only a single lineage of each survive among extant lifeforms and these   
   single lineages both existed to start diverging new lineages 3.2 billion   
   years ago.  Their common ancestor existed over 4.2 billion years ago, so   
   the genetic code would have had to evolve by that time, and it is   
   possible that it evolved somewhere else.
