An illusionist will state that the human mind has incredible properties.

Dogs may or may not be able to detect drugs by smell under ideal conditions.
I am interested in whether in drug searches of the kind described, the dogs
are detecting the presence of the drug and objectively signalling it, or the
officer is actually making the selection of who to search, consciously or
unconsciously, based on their reaction to being sniffed. I strongly suspect
the latter, based on the way the search is presented and the way officers
watch the reaction of the person being searched, rather than the dog.
