   How do you know they didn't mention anything?  In a typical case like that   
   friends try their best to help the person, but eventually you can only do   
   so much when someone is hell-bent on self-destructive behavior.  I happen to   
   know a lot about that.  I had many friends and acquaintences just out of   
   high school who abused drugs.  One person I know went into convulsions   
   regularly from Demerol abuse, but she wouldn't stop using it.  My wife's   
   mother killed herself with barbiturates, and while she was alive she would   
   visit multiple doctors using different names to get the quantities of drugs   
   that she felt she needed (and it was a lot).
