   	Because if you don't you may find it to your long   
   term detriment.  You might try reading if you can find it   
   "Generation of Vipers" by Philip Wylie to see what some   
   of the unintended consequences of extreme self-interest   
   may be.   
   	Like you might trip over a person on the sidewalk   
   and break a leg or being nicotine crazed and desperate for   
   a fix he might involve him/herself with you and cause   
   you problems.   
   	Karma is really strange and it is hard to work   
   out but from ancient times it is clear that even the most   
   damaged of individuals were sustained by the rest of the   
   tribe.  Failure to do so is really strange in a culture   
   assumed to theoretical advanced beyond tribal mores,
