People vary widely in their responses to drugs of all sorts.
Opiates are ok for killing pain but constipate. I use
them when I know pain is at hand or when I otherwise need them
to think clearly while in pain. But Codeine is a light weight
painkiller unless you chose to make a habit of it. But your response
to the initial dose seems exaggerated. These are legal drugs and
only legal versions should be used for pain relief. Illegal
opiates are not supplied in reliable dosage or even reliably
   labeled.
That alone is enough reason for a retired nurse to
leave them alone. Red Devils should have been some barbituate
and Yellow Jackets another, These were widely used in the
1950s for people with sleeping problems but are also used
by certain people for a non-alcoholic stupor (like being
   drunk).
