Because they fear the opposite the reversion of human to
animalistic, or actually sociopathic behavior. Of course some
of the most successful of our elites have been sociopaths but
in ways that were not invented when the holy books of lies were
   composed.
The structure of monogamy forbids promiscuity except in
a few religions where certain holy days over-turned the rules.
In areas where promiscuity was endorsed by the social
order it led to widespread sexually transmitted illnesses so
the anciently founded religions had the chance to observe this.
Since the main big survivors of the early period turned into
dogmatic religions bent on taking over the world and so entreat
their followers to reproduce as much as possible so that their
armies are resupplied with rock/spear/arrow/sword/cannon fodder.

Aside from the very jealous deities followed by the big three religions
who are more like jealous apes with super powers.

But once the governmental powers the West assigns to
to secular institutions are taken from under the purview of
the organized religions it is possibly that some good is done
by those religions. We can see that on specific occasions
that religion can organize relief from its strictures or even
   natural disaster.
