   	Actually as a Medical Marijuana patient I doubt very much that cannabis   
   will ever replace opiates for pain relief.  They use synthetic   
   opiates like Fentanyl to do surgery as a simple example.   
   	But the only improvement that cannabis offers is that it is not   
   a respiratory depressant.  Sometime you need to have respiratory   
   depression but not while abusing multiple respiratory depressants   
   like opiates and alcohol.

   	Just as when alcohol was prohibited it promoted the enrichment   
   of criminal entrepreneurs so will overly strict rules regarding   
   opiates and their derivatives cause criminals to become much richer   
   to the point that they will help elect moralists to high office   
   to increase their profits.
