   TURKEY and the Turkish Cypriot leadership rushed this week to draw a   
   similarity between Kosovo and Cyprus, arguing that this strengthens the demand   
   for the recognition of the breakaway state in the Turkish-occupied north of   
   the island.    
      
   They ignore a fundamental difference:   
      
   This is that the breakaway state in Cyprus is the result of foreign aggression   
   - the Turkish invasion followed by the enforced expulsion of the majority   
   Greek Cypriot population of the north of the island!   
      
   They also argue that, since the Security Council resolutions back the   
   recognition of Kosovo, the same should apply in the case of their breakaway   
   state.    
      
   Here they ignore an even more fundamental difference:   
      
   This is that the Council resolutions - which they want implemented - in the   
   case of Cyprus also demand the withdrawal of the Turkish occupation troops,   
   the reunification of the island as a single state, the return of the   
   ethnically cleansed Greek Cypriot    
   refugees to their homes in the north and the withdrawal of the tens of   
   thousands of Turkish settlers introduced to the occupied region with the   
   deliberate objective of changing the demographic composition of the state of   
   Cyprus.    
      
   So, by all means, let the Security Council resolutions be respected in both   
   cases, that of Kosovo and Cyprus.    
      
   But not on a selective basis picking only what suits the Turkish side - that   
   is recognition of the breakaway state and the legitimisation of the consequent   
   war crime, the ethnic cleansing of the Greek Cypriot population of the north
