...IIRC, Gene had gotten hints from some SAG goon that bringing in all
those "trekkies" for the crowd scene would probably result in a
grievance filed because he planned to have no actual card-carrying SAG
members in the scene. He wanted to reward the really die-hard fans
who'd kept the show alive over the past decade, and giving them a
cameo of sorts was possibly the best reward he could have given. But,
as we all know, unions exist to fuck things up for the rest of us,
hence Gene's having to pull this little scam to get around the SAG.
