Which is strange because it's not like they hadn't thrown out
exposition in single sentences before.  It could have been:
Uhura: She's Deltan, Captain
Random bridge crewperson: Deltans. Don't they emit pheromones
irresistible to 80% of all sentient species?
Kirk: I trust that the bridge will maintain order and discipline
regardless of its crew complement.
(The turbo elevator doors swoosh open to reveal ILIA, a bald Deltan
female).
It even gives the opportunity for a little "Kirk command moment."
