I don't think we actually know exactly how long into the future that was. 
Geordi and Picard did say it had been something like 25 years since they served
together, but we don't know for sure how much longer they had served together
after TNG ended.  The final TNG movie (Nemesis) came out in 2002, which was 8
years after TNG ended, and for all we know they could have kept serving
together for a while after that.
