Hmmm..  Yes, I noticed the quoted part looked the same as the original. 
Sypheed offers UTF-8.  It's on Auto-detect.  Switching to UTF-8 didn't change
anything in the previous messages.

There doesn't seem to be any "font" choices, just "encoding".
